I photograph my sweet friend Kirstie and her family every year, and it’s always a session I look forward to. We spend weeks texting and chatting, sending outfits and planning the location and coming up with ideas. I shot a mix of film and digital, on her sister-in-law’s acreage. We played with the animals and ran around in the grass. The combines in the next field created a sort of moody haze in the images that I ended up totally loving.
Planning the entire thing together, from beginning to end, makes the end result feel like a mutual collaboration instead of a staged and directed piece of art. My goal is for all my sessions to feel this way; as much or even more your own vision than mine.
All of my favourite sessions are the ones that started with a text or an Instagram DM or an email that said; “hey, what if we…”
